Indian cricket is set for another major leadership transition as Shreyas Iyer is expected to become the new captain of the Indian men’s T20 team.

According to reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has decided to hand over the leadership responsibilities to Iyer ahead of India’s upcoming T20 assignments against Ireland and England. The official announcement is expected when selectors meet to finalize the squad.

The move marks a significant shift in India’s white-ball strategy as the team continues to build towards future ICC tournaments.

Suryakumar Yadav Set to Lose Captaincy

Current T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly set to lose both the captaincy and his place in the squad for the upcoming tour of the United Kingdom.

The development comes despite Suryakumar guiding India to a T20 World Cup title earlier this year and maintaining an unbeaten record in bilateral T20 series as captain.

However, concerns over his recent batting form appear to have influenced the selectors’ decision.

Reports suggest that Tilak Varma could be named vice-captain under Shreyas Iyer in the new leadership setup.

Why Selectors Chose Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer’s appointment comes on the back of an impressive leadership record across franchise cricket.

The right-handed batter has consistently demonstrated his captaincy credentials in the Indian Premier League.

His achievements include:

  • Leading Delhi Capitals to their first-ever IPL final in 2020.
  • Guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024.
  • Taking Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in more than a decade.
  • Establishing himself as one of the most respected tactical leaders in Indian cricket.

Selectors are believed to have rewarded both his leadership abilities and consistent batting performances.

Strong Batting Performances Strengthen His Case

Apart from captaincy success, Iyer has remained one of the most reliable batters in domestic and franchise cricket.

He scored more than 600 runs during the IPL 2025 season and continued his impressive form in IPL 2026.

During the latest season, he amassed 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81, including a match-winning century against Lucknow Super Giants.

His ability to contribute both as a leader and a batter strengthened his claim for the national captaincy role.

Suryakumar’s Recent Form Raises Concerns

While Suryakumar remains one of India’s most explosive T20 batters, his recent performances have fallen below expectations.

In 2025, he failed to register a half-century for India in T20 internationals.

His T20 World Cup campaign yielded 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72.

The struggles continued in IPL 2026, where he scored 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76.

His poor run of form has reportedly prompted selectors to look toward a younger leadership group.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set for Historic India Call-Up

One of the biggest talking points from the upcoming squad announcement could be the inclusion of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener is expected to be selected for the two-match T20 series against Ireland.

If picked, he will become one of the youngest cricketers ever selected for the Indian national team.

The youngster enjoyed a remarkable IPL 2026 season, scoring 776 runs at a stunning strike rate of 237.31.

His performances earned him:

  • Orange Cap
  • Most Valuable Player Award
  • Multiple Player of the Match awards

Before joining the senior squad, Sooryavanshi is expected to represent India A in a tri-series featuring Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A.

India’s Upcoming T20 Schedule

India’s T20 campaign will begin with a two-match series against Ireland in Belfast.

Schedule:

  • 1st T20I: June 26
  • 2nd T20I: June 28

The team will then travel to England for a five-match T20 series scheduled from July 1 to July 11.

The series will also mark the beginning of a new era under Shreyas Iyer’s expected leadership.

A New Chapter for Indian Cricket

The appointment of Shreyas Iyer signals India’s continued focus on long-term planning and leadership development.

With experienced players making way for a new generation, selectors appear determined to build a squad capable of sustaining success across formats.

At the same time, the emergence of young talents such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi highlights the depth of India’s cricketing pipeline and offers an exciting glimpse into the future of the national team.
