Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee faced a violent mob attack during his visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal.
An agitated crowd hurled stones and eggs at him as he arrived to meet families affected by recent post-poll violence.
Police deployment struggled to contain the sudden outbreak of anger, forcing Banerjee’s security detail to form a protective cordon around him. Addressing the media, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the assault, calling it their version of democracy.
Banerjee expressed frustration over the local administration, stating that despite the elections concluding less than a month ago, police were absent during the initial chaos. The TMC leadership demanded an immediate inquiry into the intelligence failure that left the MP exposed to stone-throwing crowds.
The BJP denied the allegations, claiming the protests were spontaneous public anger against TMC’s local leadership. Following the incident, police deployed reinforcements, including anti-riot squads, and conducted flag marches to restore order in Sonarpur.
The attack highlights the volatile political climate in West Bengal, where post-election tensions continue to escalate. TMC has vowed to launch statewide protests against the assault on its national general secretary, further intensifying the political confrontation.
