Rishabh Pant may have guided Lucknow Super Giants to a crucial victory over Chennai Super Kings, but the IPL has now penalised the LSG captain for maintaining a slow over-rate during Match 59 of Indian Premier League.

The Indian Premier League confirmed that Pant has been fined ₹12 lakh under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate offences.

According to the IPL media advisory, this was Lucknow Super Giants’ first slow over-rate offence of the season. As a result, the punishment was limited to a monetary fine for the captain without additional sanctions.

Why Was Rishabh Pant Fined?

The penalty was imposed after LSG failed to complete their overs within the stipulated time during their clash against CSK at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

Under IPL rules, captains are held responsible for maintaining the required over-rate during matches. First-time offences usually attract financial penalties, while repeated breaches can lead to heavier fines and possible suspensions.

The IPL statement read:

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs.”

Mixed Night For Pant Despite LSG Victory

Despite the fine, it was still an important night for Pant and LSG as the franchise secured a valuable win against CSK in the race for the playoffs.

The match also sparked discussions around LSG’s batting strategy and Pant’s role in the lineup. Speaking after the game, Pant revealed he was prepared to bat earlier but said the team management wanted to give opportunities to other players who had not received enough chances this season.

Pant admitted he repeatedly thought about whether he should walk in sooner but added that a captain sometimes has to respect collective team decisions.

IPL Rules On Slow Over-Rate

The IPL maintains strict rules regarding over completion times to ensure smooth match operations and broadcast schedules.

For a first offence:

  • Captain faces a monetary fine
  • No suspension is imposed

For repeated offences:

  • Higher fines can follow
  • Captains may face match bans or suspensions

Since this was LSG’s first breach of the season, the league restricted the punishment to a ₹12 lakh fine.
