The West Bengal government suspended three senior IPS officers on Friday for alleged lapses during the initial investigation of the RG Kar hospital rape‑murder case.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision at the state secretariat.
Adhikari said former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and ex‑deputy commissioners Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta faced suspension following a departmental probe. He alleged that the officers mishandled the case, offered money to the victim’s parents as a bribe, and held an unauthorised press conference about the crime that shocked the state in August 2024.
The chief minister clarified that the state government was not interfering with the actual investigation, which remains under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and is being argued in court. He emphasised that disciplinary proceedings and departmental inquiry would be led by the state home secretary under the guidance of the chief secretary.
