WFI Issues Show-Cause Notice to Vinesh Phogat, Bars Wrestler From Competing Till June 2026

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has issued a show-cause notice to Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, accusing her of multiple disciplinary and anti-doping violations.

The federation has also declared the 31-year-old ineligible to participate in domestic wrestling events until June 26, 2026.

According to reports, the action was taken after Vinesh allegedly failed to complete the mandatory six-month notice period required under United World Wrestling (UWW) anti-doping regulations for athletes returning from retirement.

Wrestler Given 14 Days to Respond

In a detailed notice, the WFI stated that Vinesh has been accused of conduct that allegedly harmed the image and reputation of Indian wrestling. The federation has given her 14 days to submit a written response to the allegations.

The notice reportedly stated that, as a registered wrestler representing India at international competitions including the 2024 Summer Olympics, Vinesh remains subject to WFI disciplinary regulations and international wrestling rules.

Key Allegations Against Vinesh Phogat

The federation has reportedly asked Vinesh to explain four major issues, including:

  • Her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 after failing to make weight in the women’s 50kg category.
  • Alleged failures to provide accurate whereabouts information under anti-doping rules.
  • Competing in two separate weight categories during the March 2024 selection trials organised by the IOA-appointed ad-hoc committee.
  • Alleged violations of WFI constitutional provisions and UWW competition rules.

The WFI also claimed that her actions caused “national embarrassment” following her disqualification from the Olympic final stage over weight issues.

Vinesh Ruled Out of Upcoming National Tournament

Due to the suspension period, Vinesh Phogat will not be eligible to participate in the Senior Open Ranking Tournament scheduled in Gonda from May 10 to 12, 2026.

The tournament was expected to mark her return to competitive wrestling after announcing retirement following the Paris Olympics before later reversing the decision in December 2025.

Paris Olympics Disqualification Remains a Major Flashpoint

Vinesh’s disqualification at the Paris Olympics became one of the biggest controversies in Indian sports in 2024. The wrestler had reached the gold medal bout in the women’s 50kg freestyle category before being ruled overweight during the official weigh-in.

The incident sparked widespread debate across India regarding athlete management, weight-cutting practices and support systems in elite sports.

WFI Signals Tough Stand on Discipline and Compliance

The latest move by the Wrestling Federation of India indicates a stricter approach toward disciplinary compliance and anti-doping protocols within Indian wrestling.

The federation has warned that if Vinesh fails to respond within the stipulated period, it may proceed with further action based on the available evidence and records.
