The Government of India has appointed noted lyricist and writer Prasoon Joshi as the new Chairman of Prasar Bharati, the country’s public service broadcaster.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on May 2, 2026.
Joshi, widely recognised for his contributions to films, advertising, and public messaging, will now lead the Prasar Bharati Board at a time when the media landscape is rapidly evolving.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi on his appointment, highlighting his deep cultural insight and creative excellence.

Before this appointment, Prasoon Joshi served as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) since 2017. During his tenure, he was known for maintaining a balance between creative freedom and regulatory responsibilities.
Joshi has also held leadership roles in the global advertising industry, including positions at McCann World Group India and Asia Pacific. His experience spans storytelling, branding, and public communication across platforms.
Role of Prasar Bharati in Modern India
Established under the Prasar Bharati Act of 1990 and operational since 1997, Prasar Bharati plays a vital role in delivering reliable information and promoting cultural heritage across India.
With expanding digital initiatives, including its OTT platform, the organisation continues to adapt to changing audience preferences while maintaining its public service mandate.
