Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a friendly football session with young players during his visit to Gangtok on Tuesday. The interaction, described as informal and energetic, took place as part of his two-day visit to the Himalayan state.

Dressed in a blue sports jacket featuring the Indian tricolour, the Prime Minister was seen walking alongside a group of young footballers in matching kits, each carrying a football. The session reflected a moment of engagement with local youth outside official duties.

Prime Minister Shares Experience on Social Media

Taking to the social media platform X, Modi shared pictures from the session and expressed his enthusiasm. He described the experience as “energising” and highlighted the joy of interacting with young sports enthusiasts.

The post quickly gained attention, with many users appreciating the informal and relatable interaction between the Prime Minister and the youth.

Visit Marks Sikkim’s 50 Years of Statehood

The football session comes alongside a series of official engagements during the Prime Minister’s visit. Modi is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony marking 50 years of statehood for Sikkim.

He is also expected to launch development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore, covering sectors such as infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, tourism, and agriculture.

Key Locations and Events in the Itinerary

As part of his visit, the Prime Minister will:

  • Visit the orchidarium at Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park
  • Attend celebrations at Paljor Stadium
  • Address a public gathering marking the milestone occasion

The orchidarium is being developed as a world-class centre showcasing the region’s rich biodiversity.

Security and Public Engagement

Tight security arrangements have been implemented across Gangtok and nearby areas to ensure smooth conduct of events. The Prime Minister also conducted a roadshow upon arrival, drawing significant public participation.

Background: Delayed Visit Fulfilled

This visit holds significance as Modi had earlier planned to attend the statehood celebrations in person but was unable to do so due to adverse weather conditions. He had addressed the event virtually at the time and assured a future visit, which has now been fulfilled.

The Prime Minister’s football session with young players adds a personal touch to an otherwise official visit, highlighting efforts to connect with youth while marking an important milestone in Sikkim’s history.
