The Bolangir district administration announced holidays for schools and colleges from April 18 to 21 due to extreme heat conditions.
District Collector ordered the closure of all educational institutions after temperatures soared across the region. The administration took the step to protect students from the severe heatwave affecting western Odisha.
Bolangir recorded one of the highest temperatures in the state this week. The scorching heat and dry winds disrupted normal life, prompting authorities to act swiftly. The Collector said the administration will review the situation after April 21 and decide on extending the heatwave holidays if necessary.
Earlier, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond had stated that district collectors would decide on heatwave holidays based on local reports. Following the directive, Balangir became the first district to announce a temporary closure of schools and colleges.
Parents and teachers welcomed the decision, citing the unbearable daytime temperatures. Health officials advised students to stay indoors and remain hydrated during the break.
