Romi Bhinder Gets BCCI Notice Over Dugout Phone Use; Medical Emergency Cited in IPL 2026 Controversy

The controversy involving Romi Bhinder has escalated after the Board of Control for Cricket in India issued a formal notice over his alleged violation of IPL dugout rules.

Bhinder, the team manager of Rajasthan Royals, was seen using a mobile phone during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati. As per IPL regulations, mobile phone usage is restricted to the dressing room, and its use in the dugout is considered a breach of the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) protocol.

ACSU Probe and 48-Hour Deadline

The matter has been referred to the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, which has launched a formal investigation. Bhinder has reportedly been given 48 hours to respond and explain his actions.

IPL Governing Council chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the investigation is underway and a report will be submitted after reviewing all evidence.

Medical Emergency Angle Emerges

Amid the growing scrutiny, reports suggest that Bhinder’s use of the phone may have been linked to a medical emergency. Sources indicate that he has a history of serious health issues, including a collapsed lung that required hospitalisation in the past.

Additionally, Bhinder is believed to be dealing with asthma and mobility challenges, which may have made it difficult for him to frequently access the dressing room — the only permitted area for phone usage.

Rules vs Human Considerations

While IPL guidelines allow team officials to carry phones, their usage is strictly regulated. The dugout is a sensitive area where electronic device use is limited to designated analysts to maintain integrity and prevent misuse.

However, sources claim Bhinder was not making calls or sharing information but was merely checking his phone. They also noted that his health condition may have forced him to use the device without moving to the dressing room.

Viral Video Adds to Controversy

The situation gained further attention after a viral clip showed young cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi glancing at Bhinder’s phone inside the dugout, raising concerns over protocol adherence.

What Lies Ahead

The final outcome will depend on the findings of the ACSU investigation. If a violation is confirmed, disciplinary action could follow. However, officials are expected to consider the medical context before making a decision.
