Odisha braces for an intense heatwave as temperatures soar across coastal and western regions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow warning for 11 districts.
The warning covers Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Meteorologists predict that the heat and humidity will intensify further from Monday, with no relief expected for the next seven days.
The IMD also issued a heatwave alert for Bargarh district, where temperatures are likely to cross 43°C. On April 14, Balangir and Bargarh will face severe heatwave conditions, while the rest of coastal Odisha will experience high humidity and discomfort.
Weather experts said the heatwave will peak around Pana Sankranti, marking one of the hottest spells of the season. Coastal areas will remain under oppressive heat and sticky conditions, making outdoor activities difficult.
Officials advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Schools and local administrations may adjust schedules to protect students and workers from extreme conditions.
The IMD expects the heatwave to persist until April 17, with temperatures remaining above normal across most parts of the state. Odisha’s coastal belt, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, will continue to experience high humidity and discomfort.
