A high-value US Navy surveillance drone, MQ-4C Triton, has gone missing over the Strait of Hormuz after issuing an in-flight emergency signal, raising concerns amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
According to flight tracking data, the unmanned aircraft had completed nearly three hours of surveillance over the Persian Gulf before encountering an issue while returning to base. The drone reportedly transmitted a “7700” emergency code—used globally to indicate general distress—before rapidly losing altitude and disappearing from radar.
Uncertainty Over Cause of Disappearance
Officials have not yet confirmed whether the drone crashed due to a technical malfunction or was shot down. The incident comes at a sensitive time, just days after a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at easing regional tensions and ensuring safe maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
The drone was reportedly en route to Naval Air Station Sigonella in Italy when the emergency occurred.

The MQ-4C Triton is one of the most advanced and expensive unmanned aerial systems operated by the US Navy, with an estimated value exceeding $200 million (over Rs 1,600 crore).
Designed for long-endurance missions, the Triton can operate at altitudes above 50,000 feet for more than 24 hours, covering distances of up to 7,400 nautical miles. It plays a critical role in maritime surveillance, often working alongside P-8A Poseidon aircraft to monitor strategic sea routes.
