Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Anu Garg, IAS, reviewed the progress of various development initiatives in Kandhamal district and directed officials to fast-track works based on observations made during her January visit to the district.
During the review held at Lok Seva Bhavan on Monday, Garg emphasised that tourism holds the key to Kandhamal’s overall development. She discussed the upgradation of major tourist attractions near Daringbadi, including the Hill View Park, Nature Park and the iconic Coffee Garden, along with the development of waterfalls and cascades across the district.
The Chief Secretary instructed the Tourism Department to prepare concrete steps so that tourism growth directly benefits the local economy. She also held detailed discussions with the Tourism Secretary on the matter.
The meeting also focused on strengthening integrated agriculture. Plans were reviewed for upgrading the Daringbadi Coffee Garden and promoting large-scale cultivation of turmeric, spices, black pepper and strawberries. Special attention was given to forest-based livelihood products such as honey and tamarind. Officials were asked to introduce better packaging and market linkages to help local people earn higher incomes.
Kandhamal District Collector Vedbhushan, IAS, presented 25 key initiatives for the district’s development. The review deliberated on several flagship projects, including enhanced digital connectivity, expansion of minor irrigation facilities, early completion of the mega pipe irrigation project at Phulbani, implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gramya Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) roads, railway connectivity, widening of the Kandhamal-Gajalbadi road, and further improvement of power infrastructure.
Other important issues discussed included setting up agri-based industries, creation of an integrated MSME park, construction of model schools and hostels, strengthening primary healthcare services, implementation of various schemes under Gramodya Yojana, fulfilment of basic amenities, building libraries in different areas, and installation of solar-powered fencing to protect crops.
