In a shocking turn of events during Holi celebrations, at least five individuals were allegedly murdered across different locations in Odisha on Saturday.
The incidents have triggered a fierce political showdown, with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) blaming the BJP-led state government for failing to maintain law and order.
BJD Criticizes Government Over Public Safety
BJD legislator Arun Sahoo launched a scathing attack on the ruling party, stating, “Wherever there are ‘Maha Nagars’ (major cities), there have been ‘Maha Murders’ (gruesome killings).” He accused the government of failing to ensure public safety despite assurances before the festival.
“The government had repeatedly promised strict law enforcement, yet five murders took place in a single day. Criminals are acting fearlessly because they see a weak government in power,” Sahoo said during a press briefing.
BJP Responds to BJD’s Allegations
Countering the accusations, Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra held the previous BJD-led government responsible for the challenges in law enforcement today. He highlighted the police force shortage, calling it a legacy issue inherited from the past administration.
“We are dealing with the consequences of the BJD government’s inefficiency,” Mahapatra stated, adding, “No matter how much one sprays perfume, a rotten burden will still stink.”
He further emphasized that recruitment in the Police (Home) Department has begun to address the vacancies, urging BJD leaders to reflect on their own tenure before criticizing the current administration.
