The central government announced lifetime free train travel for gallantry award winners from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with eligible family members.

Officials confirmed that the scheme covers First Class, Second AC, and AC Chair Car travel. Beneficiaries can also travel with one companion. Defence authorities described the initiative as a landmark welfare measure that honours India’s decorated soldiers and their families.

The facility applies to gallantry award recipients, their spouses, and parents in specific cases. Widows or widowers of deceased awardees will remain eligible until remarriage. Parents of unmarried posthumous awardees will also qualify. The government emphasised that the objective is to ensure recognition and support for families of those who displayed extraordinary courage.

Railway officials stated that the concession ensures dignified and comfortable travel for the nation’s heroes. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the scheme is effective immediately. Thousands of military families are expected to benefit from the initiative.

Gallantry awards represent India’s highest recognition for bravery and sacrifice. They include the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra. These honours acknowledge battlefield heroism as well as acts of courage beyond combat zones.
