The recent acquisition of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by a consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group has sparked widespread curiosity among cricket fans, particularly regarding whether the franchise will undergo a name change.

The consortium acquired 100% equity stake in the franchise for approximately ₹16,700 crore (USD 1.78 billion), making it the most expensive team sale in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The deal was finalized with United Spirits Limited, the previous owner of the franchise.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Despite speculation, recent indications suggest that the team’s name is unlikely to change. Ananya Birla, a prominent figure associated with the Aditya Birla Group, appeared to confirm this by resharing a social media post stating that the franchise would continue to be known as Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Founded in 2008, RCB is one of the original IPL franchises and has built a strong global fan base over the years. The team, led by iconic players like Virat Kohli, secured its maiden IPL title in 2025, further strengthening its brand identity.

Details of the Acquisition

The buying consortium includes major global investors and organizations such as Blackstone’s private equity arm (BXPE), Bolt Ventures led by investor David Blitzer, and the Times Group. The acquisition covers both the men’s IPL team and the women’s team participating in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

According to official statements, the transaction involves the purchase of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL), which owns and operates the RCB franchise across both leagues.

What This Means for RCB’s Future

Industry experts believe retaining the Royal Challengers Bengaluru name is a strategic move, given its strong brand recognition, loyal fan following, and recent success in the IPL. A name change could risk diluting the established identity of the franchise.

With new ownership and significant financial backing, RCB is expected to further strengthen its squad, infrastructure, and global reach in upcoming seasons.
