Paapa Essiedu has revealed that he received death threats following his casting as Professor Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series, highlighting the darker side of online backlash in response to casting decisions.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, Essiedu shared that he encountered disturbing messages on social media, including threats to his life. He said that while he hopes such threats are not real, the emotional impact of such abuse is undeniable. The actor emphasized that no individual should face such hostility simply for taking on a professional role.
Essiedu, known for his performances in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, is stepping into the iconic role of Severus Snape, previously portrayed by Alan Rickman in the original film series. His casting sparked widespread debate among fans, with some questioning the reinterpretation of the beloved character.
Despite the backlash, Essiedu said the experience has strengthened his resolve to bring a fresh perspective to the role. He noted that representation in storytelling is important and expressed hope that a more diverse portrayal of characters could inspire a broader audience, particularly younger viewers who want to see themselves reflected on screen.
The actor also revealed that although he had not watched the original Harry Potter films, he grew up reading the books by J. K. Rowling and has a deep connection to the wizarding world. He described the opportunity as both a challenge and a responsibility.
