Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today inaugurated the much-awaited boating facilities at Derjang Dam in Baunarpal area of Angul district.
Built at a cost of over ₹6 crore, the project is expected to transform the dam from a mere irrigation and drinking-water reservoir into a modern tourist destination, giving a new identity to Anugul’s tourism sector and strengthening the local economy.
Speaking at the inauguration, Pradhan highlighted the district’s rich natural and cultural heritage. “From Satkosia Sanctuary and the scenic beauty of Rengali reservoir to the sacred seat of Maa Budhi Thakurani, and the holy flow of the Mahanadi and Brahmani rivers, Angul is blessed with unique treasures,” he said. “Through the joint efforts of the Double Engine Government, we will utilise these potentials to position Anugul as a prominent tourism hub on Odisha’s tourism map.”

The newly developed facilities will allow visitors to enjoy speed boats, pedal boats, jet skis and pedal swan boats. The initiative is also expected to generate fresh employment opportunities for local youth. Pradhan added that the Forest Department has plans to construct an advanced ‘Eco Lodge’ at the site in the near future, promising tourists a memorable and eco-friendly experience. He extended thanks to the district administration, Forest Department and Water Resources Department for their coordinated efforts.
Later, Pradhan attended a ‘Citizen Felicitation Meeting’ organised by Badakerjang Mandal. Thanking the people for their affection, he reiterated that the government’s core mantra is the welfare of the poor. “From Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to social security pensions, every scheme must reach the deserving beneficiaries with complete transparency,” he said. Expansion of irrigation, improved connectivity and maintaining environmental balance will remain the government’s top priorities, Pradhan assured.
