The total assets of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife have more than doubled over the past five years, according to an affidavit filed with his nomination papers as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

As per the declaration, the family’s combined assets stand at ₹35.15 crore in 2026, up from ₹17.27 crore in 2021 and ₹6.38 crore in 2016, indicating a steady rise in wealth over the last decade.

Asset Growth Over the Years

Sarma, who has represented the Jalukbari constituency since 2001, recently filed his nomination for re-election. The affidavit highlights a significant increase in both movable assets and investments held by the family.

    • ₹68 lakh across four bank accounts
    • ₹2.28 lakh in cash

    • 180 grams of gold valued at ₹25.10 lakh
  • His wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, has movable assets worth ₹13.54 crore
    • ₹3.16 lakh in cash and ₹74.85 lakh in bank deposits
    • ₹2.74 crore in shares of an unlisted company
    • ₹2.32 crore in mutual funds
    • Insurance policy with a surrender value of ₹1.77 crore
    • Loans exceeding ₹3.69 crore
    • An SUV valued at ₹21.60 lakh
    • 1.45 kg of gold ornaments worth ₹2.03 crore

Immovable Assets Status

The affidavit notes that neither Sarma nor his wife owns agricultural land. Additionally, the Chief Minister does not hold any non-agricultural land, according to the disclosed information.

Political Context

The affidavit was submitted as part of the nomination process, a mandatory requirement for electoral candidates to ensure transparency in financial disclosures. Such filings provide voters with insights into the financial background of public representatives.

Key Takeaway
