In a significant push to enhance medical education and healthcare infrastructure, Odisha’s government medical colleges are set to increase their postgraduate (PG) seats by a total of 502.

This expansion, planned over the next two years, aims to address the growing demand for specialised medical professionals in the state. The Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) has issued directives to the deans and principals of 12 government medical colleges, urging them to initiate preparations for the new seats and courses.

The initiative was outlined in a letter signed by DMET Director Professor Dr. S.K. Mishra, addressed to key institutions including the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, and the Acharya Harihar Post Graduate Institute of Cancer (AHPGIC) in Cuttack. The letter instructs the colleges to take necessary steps for increasing PG seats and introducing new courses as per an attached department-wise list.

Colleges are required to submit comprehensive proposals to DMET, including details on any new faculty positions needed and their financial implications. These proposals must be filed urgently through the National Medical Commission (NMC) application portal, with the matter marked as “highly urgent” to ensure timely implementation.

The attached list details seat expansions across various departments such as Anesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Cardiology, ENT, Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Microbiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Pharmacology, Pathology, Physiology, Radio Diagnosis, Radio Therapy, and Respiratory Medicine.

Among the 12 colleges included are MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, SCB Medical College in Cuttack, VIMSAR in Burla, and PRM Medical College in Baripada.

This move is expected to strengthen Odisha’s medical workforce, improve access to advanced healthcare, and position the state as a hub for quality medical training.
