The Odisha Government has published a notification to upgrade the Chatrapur Notified Area Council (NAC) in Ganjam district to the status of a Municipal Council (Municipality).
This initiative, issued by the Housing & Urban Development Department, marks the first step towards forming a full-fledged municipality in the area.
The notification, dated December 26, 2025, states that, taking into account the area’s population, population density, revenue generated for local administration, the percentage of employment in non-agricultural activities, and its economic importance, the entire Chatrapur NAC region in Ganjam district is intended to be declared as a “Smaller Urban Area.”
This classification, under Clause (2) of Article 243-Q of the Constitution of India and Sub-section (2) of Section 4 of the Odisha Municipal Act, 1950, paves the way for the upgrade to a municipality, enabling enhanced urban governance, infrastructure development, and administrative efficiency.
This development aligns with the state’s ongoing efforts to urbanise transitional areas, fostering sustainable and inclusive growth across Odisha.
