The Pentagon has instructed US Central Command to complete preparations for a possible resumption of major combat operations in Iran, according to US officials.
While no specific date has been set and President Donald Trump has yet to make a final decision, reports indicate that military action could potentially occur before the US midterm elections.
Sources note that any renewed military campaign could involve massive bombing targeting Iranian energy, infrastructure, and nuclear sites. However, launching a conflict within weeks carries political risks for Republicans, primarily due to potential spikes in oil prices.
A White House official emphasised that Trump holds all options open, stating that the US maintains a dominant position while Iran’s economy struggles. Meanwhile, a national security team meeting at Camp David addressed long-term foreign policy and regional planning.
Israeli officials suggest that while the immediate likelihood of a pre-midterm escalation is low, the probability increases significantly after the elections, as diplomatic efforts and talks mediated by Qatar remain stalled.
