The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, addressed the Human Rights Day celebration organised by the National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi on December 10, 2025.
She emphasised that universal human rights remain inalienable and form the bedrock of a just, equitable, and compassionate society.
Furthermore, the President recalled that seventy-seven years ago, the world united to affirm that every human being is born free and equal in dignity and rights. She highlighted India’s significant role in shaping the global human rights framework and underlined the vision of freedom fighters who dreamed of a world rooted in dignity, equality, and justice.
In addition, she stressed that human rights must reach every citizen, including those at the last mile, in line with the philosophy of Antyodaya. She urged citizens to actively participate in building a Viksit Bharat by 2047, thereby ensuring inclusive development.
Moreover, the President explained that human rights are embedded in the Constitution and promote social democracy. She stated that they encompass the right to live without fear, to learn without barriers, to work without exploitation, and to age with dignity. She reiterated India’s belief that peace and justice remain inseparable.
She also praised the NHRC, State Commissions, judiciary, and civil society for acting as sentinels of constitutional conscience. She noted NHRC’s suo motu actions on issues affecting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, women, and children, along with its discussions on prison inmates’ rights.
Additionally, she highlighted women’s empowerment as a key pillar of human rights and welcomed NHRC’s conference on women’s safety. She pointed to government reforms, including the four Labour Codes, which strengthen social security and occupational safety.
