Trump and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Hold Cordial First Meeting Despite Past Clashes: Key Moments Explained

United States President Donald Trump met newly elected New York City mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani on Friday. The meeting took place at the Oval Office and drew major attention. This was notable because both leaders had sharply criticised each other during the election campaign.

In the past, Trump called Mamdani a “communist lunatic” and a “total nut job.” Mamdani also described himself as Trump’s “worst nightmare.” Even so, their first in-person meeting was calm, positive, and constructive.

After the meeting, Trump told reporters that he believed Mamdani would “surprise some conservative people.” He even said that he would help Mamdani make New York “strong and safe.” Trump added that the meeting attracted more media attention than several of his meetings with world leaders.

Mamdani thanked the President for focusing on shared goals instead of past disagreements. He said both leaders spoke about improving the lives of New Yorkers.

Trump Responds to ‘Jihadist’ Remark

During the media briefing, Trump was asked about Republican leader Elise Stefanik’s remark calling Mamdani a “jihadist.” Trump dismissed the comment. He said that people sometimes say things in a campaign. He also described Stefanik as a “capable person” but clarified that he met a “very rational” mayor who cares about New York.

Trump Reacts to Mamdani’s ‘Fascist’ Label

Reporters also asked about Mamdani’s past remark calling Trump a “fascist.” Trump said he did not mind the comment. When a reporter pressed Mamdani about the word, Trump even encouraged him to repeat it. Mamdani confirmed it, and Trump responded calmly.

Focus on Working-Class New Yorkers

Mamdani spoke about making New York more affordable. He said that the working class has been “left behind” for too long. He pointed out that many people in the city struggle to pay $2.90 for a bus or train ride.

Trump agreed with many of Mamdani’s concerns. He said that some of the mayor’s ideas were similar to his own.

Would Trump Live in NYC Under Mamdani?

A reporter asked Trump if he would feel comfortable living in New York City under Mamdani’s leadership. Trump said yes. He added that he felt even more confident after meeting the mayor.

The meeting ended with both leaders expressing hope that they could work together. Their tone suggested a shift from hostility to cooperation.
