Invoking the heroic actions of Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar during a high-altitude mid-air crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ‘Seva Bharat’ event on Wednesday, declaring that the world will soon recognize aircraft designed and manufactured in India.
Speaking at the grand conclusion of the Seva Sankalp Yatra, organized to mark his 25 years of executive governance, PM Modi highlighted India’s expanding presence in global aviation and manufacturing.
Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot operating flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, made headlines globally after defending his cockpit during a mid-air attack by his co-pilot. Despite sustaining severe injuries, including a skull fracture, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door, enabling cabin crew and passengers to enter and subdue the assailant. The flight made a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
”Today, Indian pilots are being talked about across the world,” PM Modi remarked during his address. “A day will come when the world will talk about planes made in India.”
Earlier in the week, PM Modi directly communicated with Captain Machchhar, commending him as a “HERO” whose courage and presence of mind saved hundreds of lives and averted a catastrophe.
The Prime Minister’s remarks coincided with the conclusion of the nationwide Seva Sankalp Yatra, which began on September 17 and covered multiple regions before concluding at key heritage sites connected to Modi’s personal and political life:
- Varanasi: Hundreds of Seva Yatris and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) volunteers performed a Jalabhishek at the Kashi Vishwanath Dham. The ceremony was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and BJP President Nitin Nabin.
- Vadnagar: The yatra concluded at the historic Hatkeshwar Mahadev Mandir, with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and senior party functionaries attending.
The dual celebrations marked both a tribute to Machchhar’s bravery and a reaffirmation of the government’s push toward self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in heavy industry and defense aviation.
