Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the upcoming Big Bash League season after injuring his knee during training in Chennai.
The 39-year-old Indian all-rounder shared the update through a heartfelt social media post on Monday.
He wrote, “While training in Chennai to prepare for the upcoming season, I hurt my knee. I’ve had a procedure, and the outcome means I will miss BBLI15. That is tough to say.”
Ashwin had signed with Sydney Thunder and was set to become the first male Indian cricketer to play in the BBL. His withdrawal disappointed fans and the franchise, who had eagerly anticipated his debut on Australian soil.
Nevertheless, Ashwin expressed deep appreciation for the Thunder team. He acknowledged the warmth and support he received from coach Trent, the staff, and fellow players. “Thank you for making me feel at home before a ball has been bowled,” he added.
Now focusing on recovery, Ashwin remains committed to his rehabilitation. He also hinted at a possible visit to Australia later in the season, depending on medical clearance. “If rehab and travel line up, and only if the doctors are happy, I would love to be around later in the season and say hello in person,” he said.
Although Ashwin won’t take the field this season, he promised to cheer for both the men’s and women’s teams. His optimism and continued support reflect his enduring passion for the game and his new team.
