Shafali Verma Replaces Pratika Rawal

India named Shafali Verma as a replacement for Pratika Rawal ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 semifinal against Australia.

The decision came after Pratika sustained a right ankle injury during a rain-hit match against Bangladesh at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed Shafali’s inclusion through an official release. Once doctors deemed Pratika’s injury serious on Monday morning, selectors had to choose between standby Tejal Hasabnis and Shafali. The newly appointed selection panel, led by Amita Sharma, opted for Shafali after consulting with the team management.

Shafali’s return marks a dramatic turnaround. The previous Neetu David-led committee had excluded her from the original squad, sparking debate. She was representing Haryana in the Women’s T20 Trophy in Surat when she received the call-up and joined the team later that day.

Pratika’s absence is a major setback for India. She scored 308 runs in six innings, becoming the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. Her partnership with Smriti Mandhana played a crucial role in India’s journey to the semifinals.

The injury occurred in the 21st over of Bangladesh’s innings when Pratika slipped on the wet outfield while trying to save a second run. She twisted her ankle and hurt her knee. Although a stretcher arrived, she limped off with help from teammates.
