Clinical nutritionist Prachi Mandholia explains that you don’t need costly detox plans or supplements to care for your liver. “Simple foods from your kitchen can improve liver function and reduce inflammation,” she says.

Here are 10 foods that can help your liver heal and stay healthy.

1. Beetroot

Beetroot is rich in betalains and nitrates, which improve blood flow and lower oxidative stress. These compounds also boost bile production — essential for digesting fats and flushing toxins.
Tip: Juice beetroot with carrots or add it to salads and soups for colour and crunch.


2. Lemon

Lemons are packed with vitamin C, which helps the liver produce bile and supports digestion. Lemon water also helps reduce bloating.
Morning habit: Squeeze fresh lemon into warm water to kick-start your metabolism and detox process.


3. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

This heart-healthy oil reduces inflammation and supports balanced blood fat levels.
Use it wisely: Drizzle over salads or take a teaspoon in the morning for long-term liver support.


4. Cruciferous Vegetables

Broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower help activate the liver’s detox enzymes. They contain sulforaphane, which removes harmful compounds from the body.
Eat smart: Lightly steam or stir-fry them to retain nutrients and enhance flavour.


5. Turmeric

Known for its curcumin content, turmeric protects liver cells from damage and inflammation.
Quick tip: Add a pinch to your curries or soups. Pair it with black pepper to improve absorption.


6. Black Coffee

Studies show that chlorogenic acid in coffee can reduce fat buildup in the liver and lower disease risk.
Healthiest way: Enjoy black coffee without sugar or cream — one to two cups a day is enough.


7. Drumstick (Moringa)

Also known as Moringa oleifera, drumstick enhances production of glutathione, the liver’s main antioxidant.
Eat it often: Add drumstick pods to curries or soups to boost bile flow and aid digestion.


8. Garlic

Garlic’s key compound, allicin, helps the liver flush out toxins.
Daily habit: Eat one raw clove with warm water in the morning (if tolerated), or use fresh garlic in your meals for extra flavour and protection.


9. Berries

Blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols that guard the liver against oxidative damage.
Snack idea: Mix them into yogurt or oatmeal for a liver-loving breakfast.


10. Walnuts

Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids and arginine, which support detoxification and prevent fat accumulation in the liver.
Simple swap: Eat two walnuts daily or sprinkle crushed walnuts on salads.
