Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on Saturday urged the people of the state to uphold the ideals of Utkal Keshari Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab and work together to create a prosperous, vibrant, self-reliant, and united Odisha that truly reflects his vision.
Speaking at the 125th birth anniversary celebration of Dr. Mahtab at Sarala Bhawan in Cuttack, the Governor emphasised that the life of this great leader is not just a story to remember, but a message to follow. He stated, “Each chapter of his journey inspires us to live with purpose, courage, and vision.”
Dr. Kambhampati highlighted that although Dr. Mahtab was born into privilege, he chose a life of sacrifice and public service. “By giving up his zamindari (landholding) and joining the freedom struggle, he sent a powerful message that true leadership means placing collective welfare above personal comfort,” the Governor remarked.
Referring to Dr. Mahtab as a man of conviction and vision, the Governor noted that he fought against colonial rule with faith and determination rather than force. “For a developed Odisha, that same courage must guide our citizens, institutions, and youth to dream big and work toward transformative change,” he added.
Dr. Kambhampati recalled Dr. Mahtab’s visionary role in shaping modern Odisha, citing his initiatives in establishing Bhubaneswar as the state’s new capital, constructing the Hirakud Dam, and promoting industries and educational institutions. “These actions were not just acts of governance; they were milestones in building a self-reliant and empowered Odisha,” he stated.
The Governor also praised Dr. Mahtab’s contributions as a writer, editor, and social reformer, who awakened public consciousness through his publications The Prajatantra and Jhankar. “He believed that Odisha’s soul resides in its language, culture, and heritage,” Dr. Kambhampati said, emphasising that integrity in public life and pride in cultural identity were central to Dr. Mahtab’s vision of development.
Commending Sarala Sahitya Sansad for organizing the event, the Governor urged everyone to carry forward Dr. Mahtab’s legacy with courage, integrity, and foresight to shape a brighter future for Odisha.
Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, Prof. Kharabela Mohanty, and Sarala Sahitya Sansad President Pravakar Swain also spoke at the occasion. Former Chief Secretary and writer Sahadeva Sahoo delivered the welcome address, while Prof. Niranjan Tripathy, Secretary of Sarala Sahitya Sansad, proposed the vote of thanks.
