The situation in Cuttack is gradually returning to normal following the violent clashes between two groups during the Durga idol immersion procession on Saturday night, officials said.

District Collector Appeals for Peace

Cuttack District Collector said that the decision to suspend internet services was taken after reviewing the situation.

“What happened today is unfortunate. We appeal to everyone to maintain peace,” the Collector said, assuring that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the unrest.

Internet services in Cuttack city were suspended from 7 PM on Sunday and will remain restricted till 7 PM on October 6 to prevent the spread of rumours and misinformation.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi Monitors Situation

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed Director General of Police (DGP) to camp in Cuttack to oversee the law and order situation.

“The DGP has been instructed to monitor developments closely, ensure peace, and maintain strict vigilance,” a government statement said.

Heavy police deployment continues in sensitive areas, with officials conducting flag marches and community outreach to restore confidence among residents.

Naveen Patnaik Appeals for Harmony

Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik appealed to the people of Cuttack to maintain peace and harmony.

“Cuttack has always been known for its communal harmony. I urge everyone to stay calm and support the administration in restoring normalcy,” Patnaik said.

He also expressed deep concern over the law and order situation in the Millennium City and called for coordinated efforts to ensure lasting peace.

Congress MLA Seeks Strict Action

Congress MLA Sofia Firdous, reacting to the incident, demanded strong action against those behind the clashes.

“Six people have been arrested so far. Those who tried to create unrest should face strict legal action,” she told reporters, urging the police to act firmly against miscreants.

Background: Clash During Durga Immersion

Violence erupted late on Saturday night in Cuttack when a dispute over the playing of a song during the Goddess Durga idol immersion led to stone-pelting and vandalism. Several shops and vehicles were damaged, and a few police personnel were injured, including Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari.

To control the situation, the administration imposed a temporary internet suspension and increased security presence across the city.
