In a bid to strengthen the state’s excise revenue and streamline liquor distribution, the Odisha Government has approved the reopening of 70 liquor shops that had been closed until December 12, 2024.
The announcement was made by Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan during the Assembly session on Saturday.
Responding to a question from Keonjhar MLA Akhila Chandra Naik, the Minister stated that the decision applies to areas where liquor sales were previously banned. The move is part of a broader strategy to regulate alcohol sales and enhance revenue collection.
In addition to reopening existing shops, the Excise Department is reviewing proposals to open four new licensed liquor outlets—three in Puri and one in Bhubaneswar. Plans are also underway to establish three new bottling, distillery, and brewery units in Cuttack (one) and Dhenkanal (two).
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions, with some welcoming the move for its economic benefits, while others raise concerns about social impact and regulation. The government maintains that all new and reopened outlets will operate under strict licensing and compliance norms.
