Odisha Govt Urges Banks to Send SMS Alerts in Odia for Better Welfare Access

In a major step towards improving financial inclusion, the Odisha government has advised banks to begin sending SMS alerts in Odia, ensuring that welfare benefits and banking updates are easily understood by people across the state.

The proposal was put forward by Development Commissioner Anu Garg at the 180th State-Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) meeting, where bankers were urged to adopt more customer-friendly practices and use regional languages for communication.

Bridging the Language Gap

Garg pointed out that a large share of the state’s welfare schemes and subsidies are delivered via banking channels. However, many beneficiaries — especially in rural and semi-urban areas — face difficulties in understanding English-language SMS notifications.

“A large section of the population is more comfortable with Odia. If messages are sent in the local language, people will clearly know about the financial assistance or benefits they are receiving,” she said.

Officials believe that this step will significantly improve financial literacy, transparency, and awareness about government benefits.

Focus on Inclusive Lending

Apart from the language initiative, the Development Commissioner also advised banks to improve the credit-deposit ratio in economically weaker districts. She urged banks to:

  • Increase loans to the education, housing, and export sectors

  • Support employment generation and economic growth through inclusive lending

Expected Impact

State officials expect that introducing Odia-language SMS will strengthen trust between banks and customers and ensure that government schemes reach intended beneficiaries without confusion.

This move aligns with the government’s broader focus on digital inclusion and equitable access to financial services.
