Amid escalating “Gen Z” protests that have rocked Nepal, sources indicate that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is considering leaving the country.
According to reports from India Today, Oli is exploring the option of traveling to Dubai under the guise of seeking medical treatment, and a private airline has been put on standby.
KP Sharma Oli has officially resigned following mounting pressure from the Army Chief and escalating nationwide protests led by Gen Z activists.
Political Crisis and Public Unrest
The political turmoil has intensified on the second day of the protests, with students demanding Oli’s resignation. The demonstrations, which initially began in response to a now-lifted ban on 26 social media platforms, have expanded to include broader grievances about government corruption. The government’s decision to ban social media platforms had been met with a massive public backlash, triggering violent demonstrations.
Several ministers have resigned in protest against the government’s crackdown on the demonstrators, which has resulted in at least 20 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The private residences of prominent political leaders, including President Ramchandra Paudel and former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, have been vandalized and set on fire.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Oli has called for an all-party meeting at 6 p.m. today. Authorities have also imposed curfews in several districts, including Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur, and the Nepali Army has been deployed to help maintain order.
