Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has reached a new milestone in his chess career, climbing to a career-best Elo rating of 2785 in the September 2025 FIDE classical rankings.

This achievement places him at World No. 4, making him the highest-rated classical player from India.

The 18-year-old’s rise was propelled by his impressive second-place finish at the prestigious Sinquefield Cup in August, which earned him six rating points. His ascent marks a significant moment for Indian chess, as he now leads a strong contingent that includes Arjun Erigaisi (World No. 5) and reigning World Champion D Gukesh (World No. 6).

At the top of the rankings remains Magnus Carlsen, who, despite relinquishing his world title, continues to dominate the classical format. American grandmasters Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana hold the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively.

Germany’s Vincent Keymer also made headlines by breaking into the top 10 after a commanding performance at the Chennai Grand Masters 2025, gaining 21 rating points. Meanwhile, Wesley So climbed to No. 7 following his second Sinquefield Cup title.

In the women’s classical rankings, Hou Yifan retains her No. 1 position, while Koneru Humpy continues to lead the Indian women at World No. 6.

Praggnanandhaa’s rise reflects the growing strength and depth of Indian chess on the global stage.
