OpenAI has set up a local unit in India and announced plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, marking a major step in expanding its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.
CEO Sam Altman said India has the “ingredients to become a global AI leader” with strong tech talent, a thriving developer ecosystem, and government support through the IndiaAI Mission. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” Altman added.

The India team will focus on partnerships with governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
As part of its India push, OpenAI has rolled out:
- ChatGPT Go plan at Rs 399/month with UPI integration.
- OpenAI Academy with the IT Ministry to expand AI literacy.
- Enhanced Indic language support in GPT-5.
- Study Mode to support personalized learning.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, calling it a boost for India’s vision of trusted and inclusive AI under the IndiaAI Mission.
OpenAI will host its first Education Summit in India later this month and a Developer Day later this year. Hiring for key roles in India is already underway.
