India has unveiled its 15-member squad for the upcoming 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, to be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka from September 30.
The announcement, made in Mumbai, was marked by a few surprises and strategic decisions aimed at bolstering squad depth and maintaining consistency.
Notably, explosive opener Shafali Verma has been excluded from the final squad, though selectors confirmed she remains in the system. Renuka Singh Thakur, returning from injury, will lead the pace attack alongside Kranti Gaud and Arundhati Reddy. Amanjot Kaur, currently recovering at the Centre of Excellence, is expected to rejoin for the World Cup after missing the Australia series.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur emphasised the team’s stability under coach Amol Muzumdar, calling the selection meeting “the shortest and easiest” she’s attended. The squad features a blend of experience and youth, with a settled spin unit comprising Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Sneh Rana, and Sree Charani.
India’s recent victories against England and in the tri-series with Sri Lanka and South Africa have boosted confidence. However, concerns remain over the inexperience in the seam department and the absence of Shafali’s aggressive batting style.
The final squad includes: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (WK), Kranti Gaud, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Yastika Bhatia (WK), Sneh Rana.
India will face Australia in a three-match ODI series before the World Cup, providing a crucial opportunity to fine-tune combinations and assess form.
