Kolkata: Five wagons of an unladen freight train derailed at the New Maynaguri railway station in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Tuesday morning according to a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson.
The incident, which took place at 6:20 am, did not result in any injuries, the spokesperson confirmed. Following the derailment, several trains were rerouted via alternative paths. This route is a crucial link connecting the northeastern states to the rest of India.
The derailment caused damage to overhead electrical lines and several poles, the official reported. Efforts to repair the damage have begun, with expectations to resume train operations through New Maynaguri by the afternoon, the NFR spokesperson added.
High-ranking officials have arrived at the scene to investigate to determine the cause of the derailment, the spokesperson stated.
