Brazilian javelin thrower Luiz Maurício da Silva carved his name into athletics history on Sunday by launching a throw of 91 metres during the 2025 Brazilian Athletics Trophy in São Paulo.
With this jaw-dropping attempt, Luiz not only shattered his previous personal best of 90.68m but also comfortably surpassed Indian Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra’s national record of 90.23m. The throw elevated Luiz to the second-best mark of the year, just behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who had hit 91.06m at the Doha Diamond League.
Luiz’s dominance was evident from the outset, as his first throw already beat his own record of 86.62m. He then improved further to clinch the gold, leaving second-place Pedro Henrique Nunes trailing by a massive 10 metres.
“This was beyond imagination. To achieve this in Brazil, in front of my home crowd, and join the elite 90m+ club is incredibly special,” Luiz shared emotionally after the event.
The throw not only boosts Brazil’s athletics profile but also places Luiz among the top 20 all-time javelin throwers. His recent evolution is inspiring — within a year, he’s broken his personal best five times.
In the Paris 2024 Olympics, Luiz finished 11th with a modest 80.67m throw. But his comeback has been powerful, marking him as a strong contender for future global titles.
