In response to widespread rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, authorities have opened four additional gates of the Hirakud Dam on Friday morning.
This brings the total number of operational sluice gates to 12, currently discharging excess floodwater into the river system.
As per official data, eight gates on the left bank and four on the right are active, releasing water from the swelling reservoir. The Water Resources Department reports that 50mm or more rainfall has been recorded in 43 blocks across 15 districts of Odisha, prompting concerns over rising river levels and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
“Depending on the rainfall pattern and reservoir status, more gates may be opened,” said Chief Engineer Chandrasekhar Padhi. On Thursday, only eight gates were operational, indicating a swift response to escalating conditions.
Despite the inflows, all river levels remain below danger thresholds as of now. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert.
