In a chilling incident that has rattled Bhubaneswar, a young man identified as Kailash Nayak, originally from Buguda in Ganjam district, was found brutally murdered in his home in Tarini Basti, under the Bharatpur police station limits.

The gruesome discovery was made on Friday morning, July 18, 2025, when police recovered Kailash’s blood-soaked body inside his residence. Authorities have seized a cement brick, believed to be the murder weapon used to bludgeon the victim to death, from near the crime scene.

According to Bharatpur police, Kailash, who had relocated to Bhubaneswar just 25 days prior, was living with his mother in Tarini Basti. On Thursday, he reportedly had a heated argument with his mother, after which he left home and was last seen with a friend that night.

This friend, now absconding, is a prime suspect in the murder, with police actively pursuing leads to apprehend him. The forensic team has collected evidence from the scene to aid the investigation, and Kailas’s body has been sent to Capital Hospital for autopsy.

Kailash had a criminal record with multiple theft cases. Investigators are probing whether the murder stemmed from a failed theft attempt, a dispute over stolen goods, or another motive, which remains unclear.

The rising tide of crime in Bhubaneswar, including murders, robberies, and suspected drug-related activities, has sparked concerns for the Commissionerate Police.

Kailash’s mother, devastated by her son’s death, expressed faith in the police to bring the perpetrator to justice. “He was my son, working as a driver and painter. I trust the police will find his killer,” she said.

As the investigation unfolds, the city grapples with yet another violent crime, raising questions about safety in the capital.
