Grief and anger have come together in Odisha following the tragic death of FM student Soumyashree, reigniting discussions about campus politics, harassment, and the denial of justice.
Her close friend, Kashish Das, has made poignant allegations that depict a disturbing picture of isolation and persecution, which has sparked massive public outcry and political mobilisation.
“She was blamed while she was alive, and even after her death, justice is still being demanded. Today, our friend Soumyashree is no longer with us, but we are all filled with grief. Until a proper investigation is conducted, we will continue to raise our voices,” said Kashish.
She further stated, “Because we were affiliated with the ABVP, our friend was targeted in a political conspiracy. There were only 10 of us supporting her, while over 200–300 were against us. Soumyashree couldn’t withstand the harassment and pressure. The day we find out where the petrol came from will be the day half of this investigation is resolved.”
In protest of the FM student’s death, members of the BJD party flooded the streets of Balasore today. The shutdown began at 6 AM and continued until 2 PM, marked by tire-burning protests and slogans chanted while holding posters and placards. Shops, markets, and vehicular movement came to a standstill, affecting both government and private offices.
During the bandh, BJD workers stopped the car of the Sub-Collector near Station Chhak as he was heading towards the Circuit House. He eventually exited his vehicle and walked to his destination.
Balasore Sadar MLA Manas Dutta strongly criticised the opposition, calling their political stance “unfortunate.” He stated that actions have already been taken against the principal and the Head of Department. Dutta alleged that opposition workers subjected the victim to mental trauma. He pointed out that the previous government failed to act sensitively, allowing the accused to walk free. In contrast, the current administration has taken prompt action. Both the Chief Minister and the President have met with the victim’s family to express their condolences and ensure swift steps toward justice.
