In a remarkable stride toward bridging healthcare gaps in rural Odisha, Vedanta Aluminium has impacted over 35,000 residents across 52 villages through its flagship Mobile Health Unit (MHU) initiative.
Operating in Rayagada, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, and Jharsuguda districts, the company has conducted over 2,000 free health camps in the past two years, delivering critical medical services to underserved communities. Each MHU is equipped with diagnostic kits and essential medicines, staffed by a qualified doctor, nurse, lab technician, and pharmacist. The camps provide free medical check-ups, malaria screenings, blood sugar tests, and medicine distribution, addressing prevalent ailments like hypertension, diabetes, anaemia, respiratory infections, and skin conditions.
Beyond immediate care, Vedanta emphasises preventive health through awareness sessions on menstrual hygiene, tobacco cessation, chronic disease management, and seasonal illness prevention. The initiative spans 21 villages in Kalahandi’s Thuamul Rampur, 14 in Rayagada’s Kashipur, 11 in Sundargarh’s Hemgir, and 6 in Jharsuguda’s Lakhanpur.
Local medical professionals have lauded the effort. Nitesh Jha, Medical Officer In-charge of Thuamul Rampur, highlighted Vedanta’s proactive role in ensuring access to basic medical care. Dr. Netrananda Nayak, Head of Kashipur’s Community Health Centre, praised the MHUs for enhancing medical access and fostering health awareness. These efforts align with Vedanta’s broader mission to drive socio-economic progress through education, sustainable livelihoods, and rural infrastructure.
As India’s leading aluminium producer, manufacturing 2.37 million tonnes in 2023, Vedanta Aluminium also ranks 2nd in the 2024 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment for the aluminium industry. By collaborating with local authorities and stakeholders, the company ensures its initiatives create a lasting impact, positioning aluminium as the ‘Metal of the Future’ for a greener tomorrow.
Vedanta’s MHU program stands as a testament to its commitment to transforming lives in Odisha’s remote regions, setting a benchmark for corporate social responsibility in India.
