The Odisha government is actively considering the introduction of MBBS courses at PGIMER and Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar, a move that signals a significant boost for medical education infrastructure in the state.

Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling revealed on Wednesday that a proposal has already been submitted to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The plan not only envisions MBBS education but also the establishment of a large medical college on the Capital Hospital campus.

“The ongoing construction of the PGIMER-Capital Hospital facility is nearing completion and is expected to be ready by July 31,” Mahaling stated. The buildings will be officially handed over to the State Government by L&T and WATCO by the end of next month.

Following this, the administrative department and student hostels will begin functioning from the same campus, making it a hub for both treatment and education.

Highlighting the academic growth trajectory of the institution, the Minister noted that the number of postgraduate seats has already risen to 78, with 24 students set to graduate this year.

If implemented, the proposed MBBS program will mark a strategic step in expanding Odisha’s capacity to train and retain medical professionals while reducing the pressure on existing institutions across the state.
