Odisha Vigilance today launched an extensive investigation in the mineral-rich region of Koira, targeting illegal manganese and iron ore operations.

Acting on prior intelligence, a 12-member vigilance team—accompanied by DDM officials, the Koira Ranger, and the Tehsildar—arrived at the site in six vehicles early this morning.

The crackdown focused on key mining clusters across Malda, Kenaveta, Gidhei, and Mutukudar, believed to be hubs for clandestine ore extraction. Officials from ORSAC and even the Vigilance SP were present on-site, signifying the mission’s gravity. According to earlier reports, 50 illegal mining spots had been flagged, including 16 in Patabeda, 10 in Malda, 20 in Kolmanga, and 4 across Sanputuli and Rusibenua.

Sources estimate that over 20,000 metric tonnes of manganese ore and 1,200 metric tonnes of iron ore—valued at upwards of Rs 37 crore—have been illicitly excavated from these sites. Today’s inspection stems from Chief Minister Mohan Majhi’s stern directive to uproot mining mafia operations following a string of high-level review meetings.

Vigilance officials have launched a forensic study of documents and GPS-based mapping with ORSAC’s assistance to trace the transportation and sale routes of the stolen minerals. Further arrests and administrative actions are expected in the coming days.
