Odisha is set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, with a state-level Constitution Assassination Day observance.

A preparatory meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, was held today at Lok Seva Bhawan to finalise arrangements for the event, which will take place at the Bhubaneswar Railway Auditorium.

The program, organised by the Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department, aims to honour the freedom fighters who resisted the Emergency, a period marked by significant challenges to democratic values in India. The Union Ministry of Culture has urged state governments to observe this milestone, and Odisha is responding with a comprehensive program to engage citizens across all districts.

The event will feature a range of activities to raise awareness and pay tribute to the sacrifices made during the Emergency. The Information and Public Relations Department has been tasked with extensive publicity, including exhibitions and screenings of short films to highlight the historical significance of the period. The School and Mass Education Department will organise competitions such as speeches, quizzes, essays, and art to engage students, while the Higher Education Department will conduct workshops, lectures, and seminars at colleges and universities. Additionally, the Sports Department will arrange a ceremonial procession to mark the occasion.

Chief Minister Majhi emphasised the importance of making the event a success, urging all involved departments to coordinate effectively. “This is a momentous occasion to honour the brave individuals who stood up for democracy during one of India’s darkest periods,” he said during the meeting.

The event will see participation from dignitaries, officials, and the public, with a special focus on recognising the contributions of Emergency-era freedom fighters. Key attendees at the preparatory meeting included Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo, Public Works and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, and Minister for Odia Language, Literature, Culture, Sports, and Higher Education Suryabanshi Suraj. Senior officials such as Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Satyabrata Sahu, and other departmental heads were also present.

The observance of Constitution Assassination Day is expected to foster a deeper understanding of the Emergency’s impact and celebrate the resilience of those who fought for democratic principles.

With statewide participation and a robust lineup of activities, Odisha aims to make this event a meaningful tribute to the legacy of the freedom fighters.
