Ahmedabad witnessed a tragic aviation disaster today as Air India Flight AI171, en route to London with around 242 passengers on board, crashed moments after takeoff from the city’s airport.

According to initial reports, the aircraft went down near Meghani Nagar, with visuals showing thick smoke billowing from the crash site.

The plane took off at 1:38 AM and crashed into a building near Adani Airport in Ahmedabad at 1:40 PM.

Authorities have launched rescue operations, and emergency services have rushed to the scene. While details remain limited, sources suggest that passengers and crew members were onboard at the time of the accident. Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.

Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani is reported to have been on the flight.

“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details,” Air India said in a statement posted on X.

After the crash, Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the state’s Home Minister, and the Police Commissioner. He assured them of the central government’s complete support and stated that all necessary assistance would be provided.
