The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed hefty fines on Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer and Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya after both teams were found guilty of slow over-rate violations during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
This was Punjab Kings’ second slow over-rate offence this season, resulting in a ₹24 lakh fine for Iyer. The BCCI stated in its release that the remaining playing XI, including the Impact Player, were also penalized ₹6 lakh each or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lesser.
“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs,” said the BCCI.
In contrast, Mumbai Indians were found guilty for the third time, triggering the harshest individual punishment this season. Hardik Pandya was slapped with a ₹30 lakh fine, the highest for any captain in IPL 2025. The rest of MI’s players, including the Impact Player, were fined ₹12 lakh or 50% of match fees.
“As it was his team’s third offence… Pandya was fined INR 30 lakh,” confirmed the board.
The high-scoring contest ended with Punjab Kings chasing down 204 in emphatic style, winning by five wickets with six balls to spare, setting up a blockbuster final clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday, June 3, again at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The repeat offences underline the increased scrutiny on over-rate compliance in the IPL, especially with the Impact Player rule adding complexity to bowling changes and time management. With the stakes higher in the playoffs, the BCCI’s enforcement reflects its push for streamlined gameplay and discipline.
As PBKS prepare for their showdown with RCB in the final, both Iyer and Pandya’s fines serve as a reminder of the growing cost of non-compliance—both in rupees and reputation.
