Conservative politician Karol Nawrocki has secured victory in Poland’s presidential runoff election, marking a significant political shift in the country.
Nawrocki, backed by the main opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, won 50.89% of votes against liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who garnered 49.11% of the vote.
The neck-and-neck contest had Poland on edge, revealing deep divisions in the country’s political landscape. An early exit poll suggested Trzaskowski was poised for victory before updated figures reversed the projection hours later. Nawrocki’s win is expected to steer Poland toward a more nationalist path, aligning with the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, who supported his candidacy.
Observers believe Nawrocki’s presidency will bring policy shifts impacting Poland’s relationship with the European Union, NATO, and neighbouring nations. His campaign focused on national security, economic independence, and social conservatism, resonating with voters concerned about Poland’s stance on international affairs.
With the final vote count confirming Nawrocki’s victory, the country now anticipates significant changes in governance and diplomacy under its newly elected leader.
