Australian batter Steve Smith surpassed Ricky Ponting to become Australia’s highest Test run-scorer in Asia, achieving this feat on day two of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Smith needed 27 runs to break Ponting’s record of 1,889 runs in Asia, which he accomplished shortly after lunch by picking a single off Sri Lankan spinner Nishan Peiris.

Smith reached this milestone in just his 42nd innings, boasting an impressive average of 51.08 in Asia, compared to Ponting’s 48 innings at an average of 41.97.

Smith also recently broke Ponting’s record for the most Test catches by an Australian outfielder, with 197 catches.
