The nation mourns the passing of renowned yoga guru and Padma Shri recipient, Baba Shivanand, who breathed his last on the night of May 3 at the age of 128.

His demise marks the end of an era for spiritual seekers across the country.

Baba Shivanand had been undergoing treatment at BHU Hospital in Varanasi since April 30. His disciples remember him as a man of unwavering discipline, whose daily routine began at 3:00 AM and was dedicated to rigorous yoga and meditation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, describing Baba Shivanand as a beacon of inspiration. Taking to social media, the Prime Minister expressed his sorrow, acknowledging the guru’s lifelong commitment to yoga and spiritual teachings. “His dedication to sadhana will continue to inspire future generations,” PM Modi wrote.

Born in 1896 in Sylhet, now Bangladesh, Baba Shivanand was orphaned at the age of six. He was later guided by Saint Omkarananda, who introduced him to a disciplined, ascetic lifestyle. Known for his minimal boiled diet and rigorous spiritual practices, Shivanand lived by principles that emphasised self-control and mindfulness.

His passing is a significant loss, especially for Kashi residents and countless followers who found solace in his wisdom. The spiritual community continues to commemorate his legacy, holding prayer ceremonies and reflecting on his lifelong teachings.
