In their opening match of the Australian tour, the Indian women’s hockey team faced a tough challenge against Australia ‘A’ at the Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday.

Despite a valiant effort, India fell short, losing 3-5 in a match that showcased moments of resilience and skill.

India’s goals came from Mahima Tete (27th minute), Navneet Kaur (45th), and Lalremsiami (50th), while Australia’s clinical performance saw contributions from Neasa Flynn, Olivia Downes, Ruby Harris, Tatum Stewart, and Kendra Fitzpatrick.

The Indian team began on the back foot, with Australia ‘A’ dominating early to gain a 3-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Despite the early setback, India showed determination, pulling back three goals in subsequent quarters. However, Australia’s robust defence and attacking prowess ensured their victory.

In a gesture of solidarity, the Indian players donned black armbands to honour the victims of the recent Pahalgam attack. They will continue this practice for the remainder of their Australian tour.

India aims to bounce back in their second match against Australia ‘A’ on Sunday, striving to improve their performance and build momentum for the series.
